Departed Soles's A Dark Night and Birdie Juice have been named the two best gluten free beers in America by a panel of experts. The brewery, started in memory of the brewer's best friend, turns 10 this year.
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - CuisineWire -- New Jersey's own Departed Soles Brewing Company has been named the top Gluten Free Beer in America by an expert-led panel and consumer vote. A Dark Night, the brewery's champion in 2023, was at the top of the pecking order in this year's competition. Birdie Juice, the 2024 winner, came in second place this year.
The 2025 version of "10 Best" featured 20 gluten free beers brewed throughout America. The pedigree of entrants ranged from Great American Beer Festival winners to World Beer Cup champions, as well as winners of many other international competitions and previous "10 Best" titleholders. Each beer was selected by an expert panel of judges and tightly debated before going to the month's long public vote.

Birdie Juice, a Kolsch brewed with millet & quinoa, was the 2024 victor in its first year of eligibility. The golden ale, whose can artwork is inspired by "Caddyshack," finished in 2nd Place this year. The beer is set to return to Departed Soles' offerings for its 10 Anniversary Golf Outing for Breast Cancer Research in October, along with a apple-cider blended of the beer called "Iron Soles" with Ironbound Hard Cider.
A Dark Night, one of Departed Soles' original gluten free offerings, was named the 2023 Best Gluten Free Beer in America by USA Today, and it returned to top of the list this year. A "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "Black IPA," A Dark Night is brewed with sorghum, pours a midnight black color, and features a rich blend of piney bitterness and subtle tropical hop flavors – like a black and tan all stirred up.
Brian Kulbacki, Owner & Head Brewery of Departed Soles noted that, "Craft Beer is facing immense challenges. From rising costs to contracting distribution, less "drinking local" and rampant pay-to-play, making ends meet is getting harder and harder. To have Birdie Juice place again is humbling. To have A Dark Night rise to the top is not just a blessing, but motivating. It's the hero, we need right now!"

Inspired by the 2010 death of his best friend, Chris Ward, who had Celiac Disease, Kulbacki opened Departed Soles on June 16th, 2015, which would have been Ward's 24th birthday. The brewery will celebrate its 10th Anniversary October 31st – November 2nd with live music, a doggy costume contest, charity events, and the return of its famous "Cat-r-day" event.
