Exclusive sit-down with Ames' Aluvial Brewing reveals a new distribution deal poised to expand the craft brewery's footprint across Iowa.
AMES, Iowa - CuisineWire -- Midwest Microbrew published an exclusive interview with Aluvial Brewing founder Elliot Thompson and brewmaster Neil Blair, revealing that the Ames-based craft brewery has signed a statewide distribution agreement with Confluence Distribution. The conversation offers a candid look at the brewery's 11-year journey and its plans for growth.
Founded in 2015 on roughly 60 acres adjacent to Prairie Moon Winery, Aluvial Brewing grew from an agricultural background into one of central Iowa's most distinctive craft beer destinations. Thompson, along with co-founders Matt Nessen and Jason Peterson, initially operated out of a 48-seat tasting room while brewing in the back of the same building.
"It was just kind of a little hobby farm next to the vineyard," Thompson recalled. "We were thinking of other ways to get more community members out there and share it all with everybody."
The brewery's most significant announcement is its new partnership with Confluence Distribution, which will carry Aluvial's beers to retailers and bars across Iowa. Previously, the brewery handled self-distribution limited to Ames, Ankeny, Des Moines, and a handful of central Iowa accounts.

"That's a huge, huge thing for us," Thompson said of the deal. "We just ran into a U-Haul the other day and took down four pallets of beer, which we've never done before."
Blair, who has worked in Iowa's craft beer industry for most of his professional career, described a diverse tap list anchored by the Gilbert Gold, a pre-Prohibition-style corn lager, and the Luchus, a Citra-hopped hazy pale ale. Seasonal standouts include the O'Henry Batas sweet potato autumn ale, made with produce sourced just 150 yards from the brew house, and the Archa series of spontaneous sour ales fermented with wild microbes from the surrounding farmland.
"Beer as a beverage category is one of the most diverse in the world," Blair said. "A lot of people think it's just one or two things, and I like to show them it's a lot more than that."
Aluvial Brewing will celebrate its 11th anniversary on March 28 and will appear at the Iowa Craft Brewfest in Des Moines on June 6. The taproom, open to families and dogs, hosts a year-round calendar of live music, trivia, comedy nights, and pop-up events in partnership with local organizations. More information and the full event schedule are available at aluvialbrewing.com.
